A Continent in Smoke
This is the North America Nebula (NGC 7000) rendered from oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur data in a modified OHS palette. As I worked with the data, its colors began to resemble something closer to home: smoke filled clouds billowing from uncontrollable flames.
Over the past week, wildfires across Canada have threatened communities, displaced people and wildlife, and sent hazardous smoke across much of the continent. Hundreds of miles from the flames, skies dimmed, visibility collapsed, and air many take for granted became dangerous to breathe.
Beneath a smoke-obscured sky, this image began to take on a different meaning for me. There is an elemental connection here: the O, H, and S channels captured from this nebula are the same oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur involved in wildfires.
In the nebula, these elements glow after being energized by radiation from nearby stars. In our forests, oxygen fuels combustion, and sulfur contributes to that acrid taste in the air.
The processes are different, but the ingredients belong to the same universe.
The fires are a painful reminder that our atmosphere connects us all—and that the environment supporting every community, every forest, and every view of the night sky is more fragile than it can seem.
My thoughts are with the people and ecosystems affected, and with those working to protect them.

this was not caused by one single Canadian forest fire- it came from a broad outbreak of fires, with the smoke affecting the Northeast originating especially from northern and northwestern Ontario, alongside fires farther west in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
As of July 9, Canada reported 796 active wildfires, including 60 out-of-control fires receiving a full response. Officials expected July’s greatest fire danger around northern Manitoba, the Hudson Bay region, northern Ontario, and Quebec. Several things happened together:
- Numerous new fires appeared in northwestern Ontario, including around Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Lake Nipigon, Armstrong, and Wabakimi. Ontario reported 26 new fires in its Northwest Region on July 14 alone. The province had recorded 453 fires for the year by then, compared with a ten-year average of 312 at the same point. - A large, persistent smoke plume moved south and southeast through the Great Lakes, Toronto, New York, New England, and portions of the Mid-Atlantic. Toronto briefly reached the highest-risk category on Canada’s Air Quality Health Index, while unhealthy-air alerts spread across the northeastern United States.
- The worst visibility occurred when that smoke mixed downward into the air near the surface. That produces the gray, yellow, or orange haze you can actually see—not merely a thin plume high in the atmosphere. For the northeastern U.S., the timing was roughly:
- Smoke intensified around July 14–17.
- Parts of the Great Lakes, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic experienced unhealthy air, with some 115 million people potentially exposed.
- Rain and thunderstorms on July 18 helped disperse or wash out some of the near-surface smoke. Conditions have consequently improved in much of New England, although residual haze and locally elevated particulate levels remain possible. Reuters, Connecticut air-quality update
