Core setup

Capture baseline and experiments

This page is a compact equipment and deployment reference for the astrophotography setup. It treats the gear as a construction kit: shared mounts, optics, cameras, filters, and control hardware can assemble into rigs with very different imaging capabilities.

Operational S50, S30 Pro, WiNG, and F30 can be easily deployed each night to capture data
Validating WideSky’s astro-modification is complete; the upgraded rig is validating before regular deployment
Experimental C50 is actively working through setup and deployment issues; first light has been captured, but there are still issues to work out before reliable use
Planning PiNG is not yet successfully deployed; basic setup or configuration issues are still being worked out

Imaging ecosystem

Imaging Ecosystem

Seven imaging rigs assembled from a shared collection of smart scopes, optics, cameras, mounts, and control hardware—each with a different role in the capture lineup.

Rig Main components Description Status Next steps
S50 ZWO Seestar S50 At a modest 250 mm focal length, this is my longer-reach device until the Celestron-based rigs are operational. It is used primarily for galaxies, detail regions, and smaller nebulae. Operational Continue as the primary longer-reach rig while the Celestron systems move toward operational status.
S30 Pro ZWO Seestar S30 Pro The best astro-specific sensor I have right now, paired with a useful wide field of view. It is used primarily for larger nebulae, often narrowband subjects. Operational Continue as the wide-field and narrowband workhorse for larger nebulae.
WiNG William Optics Zenithstar 61 II + FLAT 61A + ZWO ASI662MC + Sky-Watcher EQ-AL55i Pro WiNG stands for Williams-Optics: Interstellar, Nebula and Galaxies. A 61 mm, 360 mm focal-length refractor paired with the ASI662 for the tightest field of view among the currently operational rigs. ASIAIR control and dedicated guiding turn the compact imaging train into a complete narrow-field system. Operational Continue building integration on smaller nebulae, galaxies, and detail fields while refining the repeatable swap between WiNG and F30 on the EQ-AL55i platform.
WideSky Askar FMA135 + Nikon D5300 My sharpest optics paired with my largest sensor. It is optimized for very wide fields. The Nikon D5300 astro-modification is complete and the upgraded system is now validating. Validating Recalibrate and validate the astro-modified Nikon D5300 imaging workflow with ASIAIR Mini control.
C50 Celestron NexStar 5SE OTA + Nikon D5300 An unusual combination of my longest focal length and largest sensor. The result is a field of view similar to the S50—thus the name. I have captured first light with this rig. Experimental Achieve repeatable focus and complete proper collimation.
F30 Askar FMA135 + ZWO ASI662MC + Sky-Watcher EQ-AL55i Pro A compact combination using what is often a guide camera as the primary camera. Its field of view is similar to the Seestar S30—thus the name—but at lower resolution. Operational Refine guiding, power, cabling, and the repeatable swap with WiNG on the shared EQ-AL55i Pro platform while continuing regular operation.
PiNG Celestron NexStar 5SE OTA + ZWO ASI662MC PiNG stands for Planetary, iNterGalactic. A planned experimental combination that has not yet been deployed. Its long focal length and small sensor produce a very small field of view intended for planetary and intergalactic imaging—thus the name. Planning Assemble and deploy the rig in the coming weeks.

USB Ecosystem Adapters

These adapters help the four-port USB and four-port 12 V ASIAIR system use standard cables for both data and power. Voltage, polarity, connector dimensions, protocol, and load requirements are verified before a 12 V adapter is introduced into a device path.

AdapterItemStatusUse in the system
USB-A to 12 V PNGKNYOCN USB-A to 12 V adapter operational Powers the USB-A dew heater from one of the ASIAIR's 12 V outputs, preserving its limited USB ports for data devices
USB-C to 12 V PNGKNYOCN USB-C to 12 V adapter operational Allows reliable, correctly sized USB-C cables to replace rigid or inconvenient dedicated 12 V leads where the equipment's electrical requirements match
Magnetic USB-C breakaway Tciogrxp 240W magnetic USB-C adapters operational Provides a right-angle magnetic breakaway for power and data; matching cables remain in the field and office so telescopes can move between them quickly
USB-A / USB-C conversion 10-pack USB-A / USB-C adapters operational General-purpose adapters used in both directions across field and office cabling

Cable Management

Stable, quasi-permanent cable runs reduce setup mistakes and the risk of a snag damaging a camera, telescope, mount, or connector. Appropriate cable lengths and the USB adapter system keep each bundle as short and legible as possible.

MethodItemStatusUse in the system
Reconfigurable cable bundles JOTO zipper cable sleeves operational Flexible sleeves group cables by common source and destination while remaining easy to open and reconfigure
Permanent bundle finishing 5:1 adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing kit operational Water-resistant end treatment for cable bundles that have reached a stable configuration

Heat-shrink installation ROMECH 1500W variable-temperature heat gun operational Controlled heat source used to finish the heat-shrink ends of permanent cable bundles

Outdoor Power Weatherproofing

Permanent outdoor power requires layered weather protection: enclosed supplies and connections during operation, plus separate covers for cable ends and plugs when they are idle.

RoleItemStatusUse in the system
Main power enclosure Flemoon large outdoor electrical box operational Houses the main power brick and the extension connection local to the telescopes
Secondary power enclosures DIQMIAQ small outdoor electrical box operational Two boxes live on the equipment shelf: one protects the ASIAIR 12 V supply and the other holds an auxiliary extension connection
Unused-plug protection Outdoor extension-cord safety covers operational Covers plugs emerging from the weatherproof boxes whenever they are not connected

iPhone Accessories

The iPhone can act as a primary capture device or an operational instrument. Current uses include cloud timelapses that can be correlated with image-quality and weather data, plus 360-degree panoramas of observing sites.

AccessoryItemStatusUse in the system
MagSafe tripod mount elitehood MagSafe tripod mount operational Holds the iPhone magnetically and connects it to a standard 1/4-inch tripod screw
Tripod / Arca thread adapter JJC 1/4-20 to 3/8-16 threaded adapter operational Pairs with the MagSafe mount to create a compact iPhone attachment for the available tripods and Arca-style clamps
